Frequently asked questions about accessories for bird watching
Why do you need stainless steel bird box plates?
Stainless steel plates protect your bird box entrance from being chewed, scratched, or just generally made bigger by curious birds or predators. They also help keep the hole just the right size so only your favourite feathered friends move in.
Our pack of three steel bird box plates comes in 25mm, 28mm, and 32mm sizes.
25mm is best for smaller birds like blue tits, marsh tits, and coal tits
28mm is best for tree sparrows, as well as great and crested tits
32mm can fit house sparrows, nuthatches, and pied flycatchers
So, if you’re looking to attract a particular bird to your bird box this spring, you can use the appropriately-sized box plate to give them a safe place to nest.
How often should you clean a bird box?
You only need to clean your bird box once a year, after the breeding season ends. The best time is between late September and February. This gives the birds plenty of time to raise their chicks without disturbance. Cleaning helps remove old nesting material, parasites, and droppings, making the box fresh and safe for next year’s visitors. Just wait until the birds have flown the nest before you get to work.
What’s the best way to attract birds to a new bird table?
Place your bird table in a quiet, sheltered spot, ideally near trees or bushes where birds can hide and feel safe. If you fill it with a variety of seeds and suet, you’ll appeal to all sorts of different species rather than just one or two. Adding fresh water nearby helps too. Be patient – once one or two “tweets” get around, you’ll start getting plenty of visitors!
Can I connect a DVR to my existing bird camera?
Yes, you can connect a DVR to your bird cameras to record all the action. We offer 4 and 8 channel DVRs, so you can hook up multiple cameras if you want to watch several boxes or different spots in your garden. Just make sure your camera’s compatible and you’ve got the right cables. Recording means you won’t miss a thing, even if you’re not watching live. And if you need help setting it up, our Help & Support team is here for you.
Is wool good for bird box nests?
Yes, wool is a great natural nesting material for birds. It’s soft, warm, and easy for birds to tuck into their nests. Using wool made specifically for bird nesting means it’s clean and safe, too, with no unnatural dyes or chemicals to worry about. Just scatter some around your garden or place a small bundle near the bird box and the birds will do the rest.
